Live Music!
The Three of Us, The Not Brothers and Mike Hulett will perform Sunday, March 25, at A Taste of Glynn.
Three of Us
What began as an obscure duo (Bill & Bo) playing mostly for fun at small coffeehouses and local restaurants has evolved into what many are calling the best trio in the Golden Isles.
This popular group performs a myriad of pop and folk-type cover tunes from the '60s and '70s, specializing in two- and three-part harmonies in the style of the Everly Brothers, Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles and Crosby, Stills & Nash. They play several Jimmy Buffett and Bob Dylan tunes as well, and they throw in some songs made popular by Linda Ronstadt, Credence Clearwater Revival, and many others.
The group features solid musicianship with an emphasis on tight vocal harmonies and many years of musical experience. Bill has been performing professionally for over 30 years and Bo has been playing for over 45 years. Marie, who joined the group about a year ago, has been playing professionally for over 15 years and has become a real focal point for their performances. With her awesome bongo playing, stellar vocals and an arsenal of percussion instruments, she keeps the audience wondering what she’ll do next. This band is just plain fun to watch as well as hear!
They play songs that you grew up with, tunes that bring back memories for most of their audience. Bo is also a songwriter, working on some original tunes. Bill also writes a weekly internet newsletter called the “Golden Isles Music Scene,” which tells local subscribers where and when they can find live music in and around the Golden Isles. His goal is to promote live music to the local folks who will appreciate and support it. It’s a free service, available through email…if you’d like to subscribe, just send an email request to Bill Townsend at elaineandbill@bellsouth.net and he will add you to his growing database.
They are currently the “house band” every Thursday night at the Village Inn & Pub, and they have played for several functions on Sea Island as well as other local restaurants and country clubs. They have also played for other private events as well, including weddings, rehearsal dinners, reunions and some fundraisers.
The Not Brothers
Mike Dyche and Patrick Saylor met in the summer of 2006. “From the beginning, we talked about music. It eventually got to a point where we were finishing each other’s sentences,” Mike explained. "It was like we were 'twin sons of different mothers.' When we began performing together, The Not Brothers seemed like the natural choice.”
“The joke is that we’re not brothers, even though we grew up listening to the same music and having many of the same experiences."
Dyche, a native of Griffin, Ga., has worked as a professional musician since he was 18, when he began recording with Bill Lowery’s Southern Tracks Records in Atlanta. He’s written songs for Bertie Higgins, Doug Stone, Ray Stevens and Leroy VanDyke. He worked on projects and sang with Billy Joe Royal, Tommy Roe and Jerry Reed, and has been the opening act for Three Dog Night, Joe South and Myla Mason, and many others.
His song, “A Christmas Card” is a standard on holiday play lists around the world.
Saylor began playing the bass guitar when he was 13 and had his first paying gig when he was 14. “We played at the Eagle’s Club in Grand Island, Ne.,” he explained. “We knew maybe two or three songs, and we just played them over and over. Later that summer I went on vacation and while I was gone the singer sold his guitar to buy a motorcycle. That was the end of our band.”
During the past 35 years, Saylor has played professionally in practically every musical genre except bluegrass. His musical resume includes stints with a polka band, country bands, rock & roll, jazz trios and big bands. Locally, he was a member of the praise bands at St. Simons United Methodist and St. James Lutheran churches, and he worked briefly with the “Good Old Boys” at Blanche’s Courtyard on St. Simons Island.
The Not Brothers formed in early 2007. “Patrick and I got together at a Christmas party and started playing songs,” Dyche said. “That went so well that we decided to start performing as a duet. We’ve played a lot on St. Simons Island, and the audiences have been extremely supportive.”
According to Saylor, their repertoire is “mostly singer-songwriter stuff – songs by The Beatles, Eagles, Jimmy Buffet, Van Morrison, Jackson Browne and others – as well as a bunch of stuff from the '60s and '70s – the Turtles, Drifters, Youngbloods, Gerry & The Pacemakers,” he said. “Pretty much the stuff we grew up listening to.”
Michael Hulett
Formerly of Palm Beach, Florida and now based in Georgia’s Golden Isles area (Brunswick, St. Simons & Jekyll Islands) Mike Hulett’s heartfelt soulful vocals combined with his smooth yet smokin’ jazz and R&B stylings on sax make him a favorite entertainer.
Having performed since the age of ten, Mike is fluent on alto, tenor and soprano sax. His repertoire centers around an eclectic mix of classic and modern jazz, combined with fusion and funk jazz styles. Rounding out the mix are select favorite R&B, soul and rock/pop tunes. Mike has been a featured performer at venues including local fairs and festivals, nightclubs, restaurants, corporate events and weddings. With a wide variety of material, Mike can fit the bill for a small intimate jazz venue or a large dance club.
Mike performs primarily as a solo act, but is also a popular addition to many local bands, providing a great driving sax background and harmony vocals.
